Stephen J. Shawl was appointed Assistant Professor of Astronomy and Physics at the University of Kansas in 1972. His research interests have focused on globular cluster dust and optical observational astronomy. He has held many professional and academic memberships with national and international astronomical organizations. Author of numerous publications in academic journals as well as a standard textbook for junior college and college level introduction to astronomy courses, Shawl has made an active part of his career to develop the teaching of astronomy and applied sciences.

Clyde William Tombaugh was born February 4, 1906 on a farm near Streator, IL. The family moved to a farm in Kansas in 1922. He was hired to conduct planet-search photography in 1929 at the Lowell Observatory in Flagstaff, AZ. On February 18, 1930, Tombaugh discovered the ninth planet Pluto. The official announcement of the discovery was made March 13. Born June 18, 1943, Stephen J. Shawl received his A.B. in Astronomy at the University of California at Berkeley in 1965 and his Ph.D at the University of Texas at Austin in 1972.
